CARE & MAINTENANCE

Due to the delicate nature of the silk and zari work, maintaining it properly ensures its longevity and preserves its beauty. Here are some essential steps for caring for and maintaining your silk saree:

1. Storage

  • Keep It Dry: Store the saree in a cool, dry place. Avoid exposure to moisture, as silk can be sensitive to humidity.

  • Use a Fabric Bag: Store the saree in a breathable cotton or muslin bag. Avoid plastic bags, which can trap moisture and lead to mold or mildew.

  • Avoid Sunlight: Keep the saree away from direct sunlight to prevent color fading.

2. Handling

  • Wash Hands: Always wash your hands before handling the saree to avoid transferring oils or dirt.

  • Avoid Heavy Jewelry: When wearing or handling the saree, avoid sharp or heavy jewelry that could snag or damage the fabric.

3. Cleaning

  • Dry Clean Only: It’s generally best to dry clean silk sarees to preserve the fabric and intricate designs. Choose a reputable dry cleaner experienced with silk garments.

  • Spot Cleaning: For minor stains, gently dab the area with a clean, dry cloth. Avoid rubbing, as this can damage the fabric. If needed, consult a professional for spot cleaning.

4. Ironing

  • Low Heat: If ironing is necessary, use the lowest heat setting on your iron. Preferably, iron the saree on the reverse side to avoid direct contact with the fabric’s surface.

  • Use a Pressing Cloth: Place a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the saree to protect the silk from heat damage and to prevent shine.

5. Washing

  • Hand Wash (If Necessary): If you need to hand wash, do so with cold water and a mild, silk-specific detergent. Gently agitate the water and avoid wringing or twisting the fabric. Rinse thoroughly.

  • Drying: Lay the saree flat on a clean, dry towel to air dry. Avoid hanging, as this can cause stretching. Never wring out water or use a dryer.

6. Protecting From Pests

  • Use Mothballs: Place mothballs or lavender sachets in your storage area to protect the saree from moths and other pests.

  • Regular Check: Occasionally check for signs of pests or damage and address any issues promptly.

By following these steps, you can ensure that your silk saree remains in excellent condition, allowing you to enjoy its beauty and elegance for years to come.
